Cats generally groom after eating or may have a quick lick when they want to create a distraction or feel slightly ‘embarrassed’ by a situation. For instance, a cat may misjudge (although rarely happens) a distance between landing stations and so will quickly lick itself after falling.

However, it will stand out and be noticeable if your cat starts to constantly lick itself. Constant feline over grooming can lead to loss of hair and bald patches and worse case scenarios – breaking of skin.

feline over grooming starts out as a reaction to a stressful situation and can turn into a habit even when the initial cause of stress has been removed.

Finding out what is causing your cat to be stressed can be tricky and it’s always best, if you cannot find an answer yourself, to hire in a specialist cat behaviourist who has studied cat behaviour and will have a better understanding on what may be happening.

You should also speak to your vet about any underlying medical issues.
