feline-marking-and-feline-spraying
A natural behaviour for cats is to mark or spray territory as a natural permanent form of communication. It allows a visual or olfactory message long after the communicator has gone and is used to mark territory, signal the cats presence and also as a form of re-assurance.
One example of when a cat will mark inside the home is if it sees a cat outside. Marking is different from inappropriate peeing or defecating outside of the litter tray.
A cat usually stands to mark, as the above photo indicates, and will quiver its tail. Peeing is done in squirts but over a large surface area. Covering the urination is rare.
If you believe your cat is marking inside the home you need to find out the reasons why. Punishment will do nothing to stop this behaviour and your cat will have no idea why you are angry at it for doing a natural behaviour.
A cat behaviour consultation from a specialist who has studied feline-marking-and-feline-spraying should assist you in determining whether you cat is marking or whether something else is going on. A behaviour modification plan can only be put into action once the correct diagnosis has been reached.
